Colavita New Jersey U19 Racing Team - the Next Lance Armstrong?

Linden, NJ -  May 16, 2006 The Colavita/Cooking Light Women's Cycling Team, the #1 women's cycling team in the U.S., returns to its home state of New Jersey to race in the Tour of Somerville on May 29.  John Profaci, Vice President of Linden, NJ-based co-title sponsor Colavita USA, made the announcement.

"We are thrilled to welcome the Colavita/Cooking Light Women's Cycling Team home to New Jersey," says John Profaci, Vice President of Linden, NJ-based co-title sponsor Colavita USA.  "The women have had an extraordinary season, with podium appearances in nearly every major race on the U.S. cycling calendar, along with top 10 finishes in world-class international competitions."

Tina Pic, the #2 female cyclist in the U.S. and three-time overall USCF Overall Champion, will lead the Colavita/Cooking Light squad at the Tour of Somerville. Joining Pic at the starting line will be Colavita/Cooking Light teammates Iona Wynters Park, Sima Trapp, Sarah Tillotson, and Sue Palmer-Komar.

Team Colavita will also be represented in the 15-mile Harry Naismith Juniors Race, a designated event in the Junior Olympic Series supported by Lance Armstrong to develop the next generation of world-class cyclists.  The Colavita New Jersey U19 Racing Team is one of the largest youth cycling programs in the state.  Co-captains Julian Fernandes, 18, of Bridgewater, the New Jersey Garden State Cup Champion and NJ State Criterium Champion, and Carter Jones, 17, of Maplewood, New Jersey State Points Race Champion, lead a roster that includes more than 30 teens.

"We are particularly proud of the accomplishments of the Colavita Junior Racing Team," says John Profaci, "The under-19 program represents the future of the sport.  Lance Armstrong and many of the top U.S. and international cyclists who will be competing in the Tour of Somerville began their championships careers in the junior ranks."

Kyle Wamsley of the Colavita Olive Oil/Sutter Home Winery Cycling Team and the reigning champion of the Tour of Somerville is a standout example.  As Profaci explains, "Kyle's been cycling competitively since he was 13, winning his first title at 17.  We were so impressed with his performance in his first year on the pro circuit that we recruited him this season for the Colavita Olive Oil/Sutter Home Winery squad."

Wamsley will return to defend his title in the 50-mile Kugler-Anderson Memorial Tour of Somerville with Colavita Olive Oil/Sutter Home Winery teammates Mark McCormack, the former USPRO Champion, Viktor Rapinski, Davide Frattini, Jonathan Page, Sebastian Alexandre, Gustavo Artacho, Tyler Wren, Todd Herriott, and Gabriel Brizuela.
