Shaklee MGA Proving Grounds Road Race, 165kms
July 12, 2005

Colavita/Sutter Home sprinter Juan Jose Haedo takes 2nd in stage five.

The rain poured down on the riders as they lined up to begin stage five of Super Week. Today’s stage took the riders around eleven laps of a fourteen-kilometer circuit, totaling a 165-kilometer race. The circuit began and finished in the Proving Grounds Park and brought the riders through the rolling neighborhoods of Burlington, Wisconsin.

There was an early break of fifteen riders off the front of the field two laps into the race. Eventually this break split and six riders snuck away from the break containing Juan Jose Haedo (Colavita/Sutter Home), Karl Menzies, Wes Hartman (Endeavour), Jacob Nielson (Marstrand Horsens), and three others. “We got off the front of the break with four laps to go and with five kilometers left in the race Hartman and Nielson attacked,” says Haedo.

Both Hartman and Nielson gained a gap on this break coming into the finish. “Hartman attacked Nielson coming into the finish and won. I passed Nielson coming to the finish line and came second,” says Haedo.

The competition at Super Week continues to grow as riders make appearances in order to prepare for the up coming Tour De Toona next week. Today’s stage was a 2-mile, rolling loop that brought the riders through the Boerner Botanical Garden. The riders completed 20-laps, totaling a 75-kilometer race.

There were many attacks in the beginning of the race, which caused the speeds of the field to be very high. There was an early break of three riders but none were able to stay away from the chasing field. “Jonathan helped lead me out and I stayed behind him until the last corner. He passed me again, trying to get ahead of Menzies. I went passed them in the sprint and won,” says Haedo.

US National Cyclo Cross Champion Jonathan Page wins the Schlitz Park Endeavour Challenge criterium.

Today’s criterium was held in the Historic King Drive Business Improvement District taking the riders around some of the most prized development in Milwaukee. The criterium has four corners and one steep climb that the competitors of the 2005 International Cycling Classic raced up each lap. The men completed 80 laps totaling 100kms of aggressive and fast racing. After multiple attacks a break of thirty riders made their way up the road containing Colavita/Sutter Home rider Jonathan Page. The break had a lot of horsepower and lapped the field with 18-laps remaining. Once in the field, Page had teammates Tyler Wren, Todd Herriott, Sebastian Alexandre, and Juan Jose Haedo remaining to help him with the final laps of the race. “When Jonathan lapped the field he got on my wheel and I brought him to the front to keep him safe until the end,” says Haedo.
